When integrated, surgical training and technological innovation will yield the highest possible level of surgical care. To drive this concept, Orsi InnoTech wants to create a new paradigm for translational research in innovative surgical technologies.
Realization of so-called precision surgery means that -next to being proficiently trained- a surgeon has to be equipped with the most optimal tools for the job. Technological innovations development have allowed surgical care to meet todays standards. In other words, technological innovations mean surgery can address the societal demand for personalized medicine. Examples of such innovations are the routine use of minimally invasive laparoscopic or robot-assisted procedures. The positive impact of these enabling technologies on the level of surgical care is evident. That said, relying on e.g. laparoscopic and endoscopic interventions has reduced the surgeon’s connection to the patient, which in turn has created a demand for technologies that: 1) enable surgeons to identify specific anatomies e.g. image guided surgery or 2) tools that enhance the surgeons “cutting” accuracy and positioning accuracy. To help address the need for surgical technologies, we now complement our activities in surgical training (Orsi Academy) with efforts in the area of R&D (Orsi InnoTech).

At Orsi InnoTech, we have an independent R&D strategy towards the realisation of innovative surgical training programmes and (enabling) medical technologies. In addition, we make our expert knowledge and a state-of-the-art surgical facility available to accommodate external partners in high-level preclinical evaluation studies that intent to:
- optimize product performance
- speed up clinical translation and
- increase the success rate of clinical evaluation studies e.g. by minimizing the chance of patient exposure to product-associated side-effects
Our InnoTech activities are supported by experts with backgrounds in (veterinary) medicine, biology, chemistry, mechanical and software engineering and/or physics. As result of our longstanding expertise in research, we can support private or public partners at any point in their development trajectory. Following an initial consultancy wherein an external customer describes the status of their enabling technology and the desired end-goals, we offer a tailored development package that is focussed on accommodating product transition into clinical care. For early stage initiatives, we can partner-up and help provide a one-stop-shop R&D collaboration. If needed, we can help our customers build their product-development team by including the expertise of our trusted academic and/or commercial partners. Following preclinical validations, we can call upon Orsi’s strong (inter)national network of renowned surgeons to ensure translation into high-quality first-in-human trails.
By housing Orsi Academy & Orsi InnoTech under the same roof, we stimulate the connection between researchers/companies and clinical end-users. This provides a unique entrepreneurial platform that drives product valorisation. By matching R&D efforts with product-tailored training modules we are also support our partners in realizing a level of expert medical education that surpasses that of most academic centres. This unique setting, combined with our meeting rooms, lecture halls, and video broadcasting facilities also is optimally equipped for knowledge transfer.
